Welcome home, Dirk! He arrived safely at 5:45 a.m. I found out the reason the flight was so early is that Southwest is the only airline that wanted the charter contract the military put out, and Southwest said when they would fly. *yawn* The Army also insists soldiers be at the airport at least four hours before the boarding, so Dirk was at the base airport at 11:00 p.m. last night to arrive in Utah at oh dark hundred this morning. We only had to get up at 4:00. I didn't get much sleep either, though, because I woke up every 10 minutes to look at the clock: "what do you mean, it's only 1:10 a.m.?!!"
Dirk's flight actually got there early, so no one was there to watch him walk off the plane. Well, other people were there, but none of Dirk's relatives. The second plane, due in at 6:45 a.m., also arrived early, so all of us who were there for the 5:45 plane got to cheer for the second half of the soldiers. I tried to take pictures of the flags they had lining their arrival, but it was too dark. Here are dark pictures.
Shawn and Ethan, and then Kecia, Glenn and Emma were there first. Then I arrived with Kelly (glad I ran into Kelly in the parking lot because he carried Ben for me). My parents found us not long after that. Mauri and Ira brought the whole family. Susan was last. Poor Susan! Her alarm didn't go off, and I don't even want to know how she managed to get from Layton to Salt Lake as fast as she did.
I'd told Dirk we'd be carrying St. Patrick's Day balloons so we would stand out from other sets of yellow and patriotic balloons. Turns out there weren't that many balloons there anyway, but Dirk said he spotted my green balloons before he saw me, so they worked. Shortly after that, the balloons made a dash for freedom:
It was wonderful to see Dirk. The big hangar was freezing and crowded, and it was just awesome to see all the soldiers wandering around carrying yellow roses and finding family members. The military rock band was also there (bet you didn't know the military had a rock band). They added to the festive atmosphere, but the sound system in the hangar is so enthusiastic that it made it hard to talk.
Afterwards, we all went for breakfast at IHOP. There were two other big groups of people there with their soldiers.
Yesterday, Susan brought down lots of flags, and put the rebar into the soft dirt in the flowerbeds. The flags looked great when she put them up yesterday! Then we took them all down for the night. The next morning, the wind was so strong that 5 minutes after I'd put them up, several were leaning dangerously, so I pulled a bunch of them out. The ward put another two dozen flags around the perimeter of the yard, and those held up great! Our yard looked festive! Susan made a lot of yellow ribbons too, and those looked wonderful.
After we got home, Simon went right to back to sleep. Then he woke up, and Dirk and Benji are napping now. I get the afternoon nap shift. So if you're wondering how we celebrated Dirk's safe arrival, we all just went back to sleep.
We're so happy he's home!

Oh so fun you posted this already! WELCOME HOME DIRK! So glad you are home safe! Happy day you are all back together! I am so happy for you!
YAY! He's home! Sorry we bailed on breakfast. I just knew that trying to wake Emma up again would not be a pleasant event. I'll post my pictures soon too. I can't believe he's back! Too bad we weren't there to welcome him off the plane, but it was a surprise to see his head above the crowd when I walked in the hangar. It reminded me very much of when he came home from his Macedonia tour. Welcome home Dirk! We are so proud of you.
Welcome Home!! Melinda I am so glad Dirk is finally home. I was thinking about you all week long. Hope you enjoy him being home and can't wait to see you next month when you come visiting teaching.
YEAHHHHHH! Dirk is home! I am glad that it all went well and that he is finally home. What a blessing for him to be here again. Enjoy his time off before he returns to work!
We are so glad he is home. Wish the kids didn't have school this morning so we could all have been there. It is just to hard when Cade misses a day of school. I would have loved to be there. Hope tomorrow is a great day for you after you all catch up on sleep.
I am so glad he is safely HOME... Thank you Dirk for your service... Thank you Melinda for keeping the home fires burning so brightly...
May you all be wonderfully blessed... and may you have many many joyful days ahead.

Wahoo! I bet you are sooo relieved to have him home. Welcome back, Dirk!
YEA!!!!!! Dirk, Thank you SOOOO much for your sacrifice for all of us and our freedoms. I know I've told you this before but I can't repeat it enough times. We're so glad you're home safe and sound and back in your family's arms. Melinda you are an incredible woman. Dirk truly deserves someone like you! I don't know if I would have made it had it been me.
I know that every time they announce that soldiers with the Air National Guard are returning I always pay close attention to see if I recognize any of the faces of the family and friends or the soldiers.
WELCOME HOME!!!
(The flags were cool!)
It is soooo great having Dirk home again. I will come down next week and get the flags back. I would have liked to see your yard with all my flags up AND all of the wards flags up - that is so neat that they would decorate your yard like that.
yeah, that was a FAST trip to Salt Lake yesterday morning but it was worth it.
Welcome Home Son - we are proud of you!
Welcome home Dirk!! How happy that you guys are all together again, I love your pictures, everyone looks so happy especially to be so early! Love the flags, that is awesome!! We must've been in a sick coma over at my house because I missed the whole thing.
We left on our way to Mesquite and noticed all the flags. Mom and Steve inquired and I told them Dirk must be coming home that day! The yard did look awesome! Thank you all for the sacrifice of having Dirk serve this great nation! Melinda, I absolutely love the giant smile on your face in the pics! Welcome home, Dirk!!! Thank you!!!
It was wonderful to see the flags that were put up in your yard. We are so glad Dirk's safely home.
