Big huge thank you and hugs to Dirk for sending such a neat present! It's a cute book too. It's called "Put Me In The Zoo", and Dirk says it was one of his favorites as a little kid.

Benji's new book from Dad
We got a surprise in our mailbox today. There was a big envelope addressed to Ben, with a return address of Bagram. Dirk hadn't told us anything was coming. He'd sent Ben a book and a DVD of him reading the book to Ben. Ben sat there, mesmerized. He doesn't do much with the book in this initial clip, but by the third or fourth time through, he'd turn a page. He knows his dad is reading him the book he's holding. I paged through it with him once.

What an AWESOME surprise & present. That's something that can be treasured forever, not just while he's a kiddo. Now Dirk can read to his grand kids & great grand kids some day --- if DVD's are around that long! ;-) Fabulous idea Dirk.
Awww...how sweet! Awesome idea!
Good job daddy - your Ben loves to watch you on the tv and this makes it so very personal. What a special thing to do. I'm almost jealous!!
That is so neat! I'm sure that it will soon replace "Melmo" in the requests to watch.
Way to go, Dirk!

What a wonderful Daddy. Not only is Benji going to love this movie, he's going to love to read (more than he already does) for the rest of his life. What a wonderful gift to give your little boy.
That was the sweetest thing I've ever seen. You have me bawling here (I'm turning into my mother...and my grandmother)!
I am sure he loves it. That is a really neat idea. Even if your not overseas. I am sure Jace would love that from Shawn. Great Idea Dirk!
The flyer says it's a USO sponsored thing. I haven't asked him yet, but I'm hoping Dirk can do this again. Maybe this set up is available at the base he's at now, and not just Bagram.
Ben loved it. After a while, he got tired of watching it and went to play, but when it finished and daddy's voice disappeared, he'd come charging back in the room calling for daddy.
Sadly, it's only available at Bagram. I had seen flyers for the program there and at the base in Krgystan we were at for a couple days. But didn't find the place to actually do it on Bagram until the day before I left there.
The USO guy would love to visit the FOB's and let people do it more, but his supervisors won't let him travel to the other bases due to the danger.
So that will most likely be the only one, unless I have a few days at Bagram to or from leave or when we head home.
Of course Da had to tape the part at the beginning when I could hardly speak, due to my emotions.
Anyway I filmed it the afternoon of 13 May, it most likely got dropped in the very next mail shipment going out.
That just makes me all sorts of happy inside, what a great gift! He'll probably wear it out before he gets home!!
What a wonderful surprise for Benji (and mom too!) WTG Dirk! You are a good daddy :)
